Yule Never Guess What?

Yule Never Guess What?

Christmas is just around the corner! Here are some random factoids for your Christmas party convo:

- During the Christmas of 1914 (World War 1), a truce was held between Germany and the UK. They decorated their shelters, exchanged gifts across no man's land and played a game of football between themselves.

- There is a village in Peru where people settle the previous year's grudges by first fighting. They then start the New Year off on a clean slate.

- Telling scary ghost stories is an old Christmas Eve tradition that has died out in the past century.

Can Chocolate Make You More Productive at Work?

Can Chocolate Make You More Productive at Work?

Can chocolate doled out by your boss make you and your coworkers happier and more productive at work? (Hey, who doesn't want to enjoy their job more?)

Apparently, employers can buy happiness. Or, at least, they can boost productivity in the workplace - by about 12%.

Three economist at the University of Warwick in England have published a paper finding that happy people work harder. Not exactly a novel conclusion, but it does show how to bribe people to be more productive: feed the fruit and chocolate or show them clips of English stand-up comedy.

The study, tested more than ...

The A - Z of Coffee Words

The A - Z of Coffee Words

AKA what are those words they use in the coffee shops? To celebrate International Coffee Day, here is a list of words that all coffee lovers should know.

Altura - "Heights" in Spanish; describes Mexico coffee that has been high-or mountain-grown.

Barista - Italian term for skillful and experienced espresso bar operator. (But we're sure you knew this already)

Caffé Americano - An espresso lengthened with hot water. Nothing's better than an English girl ordering an Americano.

Demitasse - "Half cup" in French; a half-size or three-ounce cup used primarily for espresso coffee.

Earthiness - Either a taste defect or a desirable exotic ...

Ugli Meets...Path

Hi everyone. It's great to be a part of Team Ugli. We were pretty chuffed when our Ugli Mother asked us to pen a little intro about us for the Ugli blog, but when we got down to it, it was actually harder than we thought. How do you introduce a new digital design studio on campus, be welcoming, but avoid going into the dreaded 'sales pitch' mode?

Here goes...

Having applied a fresh lick of paint to our four walls, we officially opened the studio in January. Since then we've been working on a mix of live ...

What Makes Good Afternoon Tea?

What Makes Good Afternoon Tea?

We here in the Ugli Office love a good afternoon tea, and so in celebration of Afternoon Tea Week, we thought we’d write a little appreciation post. Scones, cakes, pastries and teas – how could we not celebrate?

Afternoon tea is a beloved English tradition, which traces back to the 1800s when Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, began taking tea and a snack in her private boudoir in the afternoon. Since then, the practice spread and grew more and more elaborate – but what makes a good afternoon tea?

• The flavours of sandwiches should be the classics: cucumber, egg mayonnaise ...

White City: An Ugli Duckling Becomes A Swan

When the beeb upped sticks to Salford in the mid-2000s, could one truly be blamed for wondering whether White City might melt from public consciousness? Mildewed and motionless; a Miss Havisham-like vestige of its former glory…
